Example of Why We Need Depth in Our Bible Study
We had a brief discussion in class this past Sunday about the depth of our teaching and how it is worthless if it does not have enough teeth to change us.
One of my favorite teaching mentors (even if from a distance…though I have had the privilege of meeting him in person) is Michael Kelley. I am linking directly to his blog because I really recommend it as a great resource.
A couple of weeks ago, Michael blogged regarding the controversial book “Love Wins” and its author, Rob Bell. Read Michael’s comments and watch the interview to get a grasp on the controversial issues in this book.
The premise is…for many who lack depth in their understanding of God’s Word, the notions set forth in this book would tickle the ears, and make them feel good about their faith in a loving God who would never be harsh to anyone.
It reminds me of the days when Melody and I used to sit and listen mindlessly to Joel Osteen. Don’t get me wrong…after he finished…I ALWAYS felt good about myself..until the day my eyes opened with a big…”WAIT A MINUTE”. It hit me like a ton of bricks that Joel goes through that little blurb with his Bible at the beginning of every sermon, then puts it down, and never refers to it again. It dawned on me that he never talks about sin, the conviction thereof, the blood, the cross, the resurrection…and the existence of a real hell. Isn’t that the essence of the Gospel? Without those elements…what are we even talking about?
If we are properly equipped with a solid understanding of God’s Word, what it means, and its truths…we can see right through false teaching…sort of like Michael demonstrates in his post.
So over the next few weeks as we experiment with material, help me with some feedback.
Remember…if it isn’t changing our hearts, and eliminating our “stinkin’ thinkin’”, it is a complete waste of time.
See you Sunday…Jason

How to Stay in Love
One of my favorite bloggers is pastor Pete Wilson from Cross Point Church in the Nashville area.
Today he published a tremendous thought about how not to FALL in love…but STAY in love.
